Why We Can't Resist a Cardinal: New Sign Designs Just Landed

There's something about spotting a cardinal that stops people in their tracks. We hear it from customers all the time — a flash of red on a snowy branch, and suddenly everyone's reaching for their phone to snap a picture. Cardinals have a way of meaning something to people, and that's exactly why we're excited to introduce a few new cardinal sign designs to the collection.

Why Cardinals Mean So Much to People

For a lot of folks, a cardinal isn't just a pretty bird — it's a visit. The most common belief is that a cardinal shows up as a message from a loved one who has passed away, often summed up in the old saying, "Cardinals appear when angels are near." People notice them most during hard times: at a funeral, near a grave, or right when they're missing someone the most.

Beyond that, cardinals are just tied to hope and joy, especially heading into the holidays. That bright red against the snow has become shorthand for Christmas itself.

Is There a Biblical Connection?

Cardinals themselves aren't actually named in the Bible — they're native to the Americas, so they wouldn't have been something the biblical writers encountered. But the color red carries plenty of its own biblical weight, often tied to the blood of Christ, sacrifice, and redemption. And there's Matthew 10:29–31, where Jesus points out that not even a sparrow falls without God noticing — a verse a lot of people lean on when they talk about birds, cardinals included, as a sign of God's care.

So while it's not a direct scripture reference, it's easy to see how the symbolism grew out of both.

Our New Cardinal Sign Designs

new cardinal designs, exclusive Trendy Tree signs
Like the rest of our exclusive sign collection, these are 10" x 10" metal signs made using a sublimation process that infuses the color right into the metal, so they hold up and look sharp for years. You won't find these designs anywhere else — they're made just for Trendy Tree.

Ways to Use Them

These signs aren't just for wreaths, though they're a natural fit for one. A lot of customers like to set them on an easel, hang them on their own, or tuck them into a shelf or mantel display. However you use them, they're an easy way to bring that cardinal symbolism into your own home.

Our metal signs don't come with pre-punched holes, but attaching one to a wreath is easy. A metal hole punch (the small jewelry-style kind) makes quick work of it — just mark where you want the holes, punch through, and thread a long chenille stem or floral wire to secure the sign in place. If you'd rather skip the punch altogether, adhesive cable mounts on the back of the sign work just as well, giving you a loop to tie the sign on with.
