Need a quick decorating idea for Halloween or Christmas? Maggie and I put together two super simple bows using Trendy Tree ribbon and 12” seasonal signs. These small projects are perfect for crafters short on time but big on holiday spirit. Whether you hang them on a door, display on a shelf, or use them as a gift, they’re easy, affordable, and festive!
In this quick video, Maggie and I show how simple it is to make seasonal bows for your favorite signs! We each used a bowmaker — Maggie used the EZ Bowmaker, and I used Em’s Bowmaker — but you don’t have to. A bowmaker just helps hold your ribbon in place and makes the process a little easier, especially for “old” hands like mine. 😉
Maggie’s bow was a cheerful Christmas design to go with our “Gimme Some Sugar” sign, while mine added a fun, last-minute touch to a Halloween witch sign.
It’s a quick and easy way to give any seasonal sign a finished look — perfect for doors, shelves, or even as a small gift idea.
The supplies for these bows were simple — just a few coordinating ribbons in 2.5", 1.5", and 7/8" widths. The fun part about a project like this is that it’s a great way to use up short ribbon ends!
I picked a few pieces from Carrie’s stash (most are still in stock at Trendy Tree), and Maggie pulled some fresh ribbon from the shelves. It doesn’t take much of each style, especially when you mix several patterns and textures — making this a perfect “leftover ribbon” project.
These bows were made with straight pieces of ribbon, about 10" in length. The 2.5" ribbons were dovetailed at the tips, while the smaller widths were simply snipped at an angle. We started with the widest ribbons on the bottom and layered the narrower ones on top, arranging them in an “X” pattern so every ribbon could still be seen.
Once all the ribbons were layered, we lifted the stack off the bowmaker and secured it with a chenille stem. Then came the fun part — fluffing! We shaped each ribbon and smoothed the ends by running our fingers underneath to give them a soft curl.
To attach the bows to the signs, we stapled plastic utensil handles to the back of the sign — they gave us a little extra height so the bows didn’t cover up too much of the design. (Craft sticks would have worked even better, but like any crafter knows, sometimes you just use what’s on hand!)
These bows aren’t your typical style with long tails — they’re round and full, more like a ribbon flower bloom, and perfect for small signs or decorative displays.
Projects like this remind us that holiday crafting doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful. With just a few short pieces of ribbon and a little creativity, you can turn a simple sign into something special. Whether it’s for your own home or a thoughtful handmade gift, these small touches are what make decorating fun.
