Democratic Donkey Christmas Ornament 12100 Merck Family's Old World Christmas Christmas ornament made of mouth blown, hand painted glass. Measures approximately 3 1/4". The Donkey is the emblem of the Democratic Party. Originally adopted in 1828 by Andrew Jackson as an allusion to his nickname, the association was further strengthened by political cartoonist Thomas Nast. The Donkey represents stubbornness, courage, intelligence and humility. The now-famous Democratic donkey was first associated with Democrat Andrew Jackson's 1828 presidential campaign. His opponents called him a jackass (a donkey), and Jackson decided to use the image of the strong-willed animal on his campaign posters. Later, cartoonist Thomas Nast used the Democratic donkey in newspaper cartoons and made the symbol famous. Democrats today say the donkey is smart and brave, while Republicans say the elephant is strong and dignified.
