Salt Dough Snowflake Christmas Oranment

Snowflakes and cookies.....anything sweet is all go for Christmas! This Snowflake Cookie ornament was created by Better Homes and Gardens and here's there recipe:

These snowflakes aren't edible, but they'll definitely look sweet on your tree. To prepare the dough, mix 1/2 cup salt, 1 cup flour, and 1/2 cup water until sticky. Roll it to 1/4 inch thick and cut out snowflake shapes with cookie cutters. Use a skewer to press a hole for hanging. Bake for 4 hours in a 200 degree oven. When cool, draw hearts, squiggles, and dots with a marking pen.

My hints for making salt dough ornaments.

Bake your cookies in a clear pie plate with another pie plate sitting on top of the cookies. Even plain flour will puff up or become irregular around the edges.

Roll on the side of too thick instead of too thin.

Spray paint with a clear coat before decorating, and then spray again.

Make the hope big enough to get a piece of ribbon through. A straw works .

You can bake them in the microwave as well.....just do a few minutes at a time and keep checking them. Use the double pie plate method in the microwave too.

For Gingerbread.....just make plain dough and paint it brown afterwards....then decorate.

Great project for kids and the ornament will last for a few seasons if kept in an air tight container in an temperature controlled environment (not in the attic).

Visit Better Homes and Gardens....they have great Christmas decorating projects!
